Charlotte began her career as a bookseller in independent bookshops in London and Melbourne, most recently running the children’s department at Foyles, Charing Cross Road, before becoming an agent in 2018. She has worked at Tibor Jones, including on Wilbur Smith’s co-authored word, and at Jo Unwin Literary Agency, before founding her own agency with former editor Kay Peddle in 2022. She represents a wide range of commercial fiction and children’s authors, and is also on the lookout for brilliantly told stories with fresh perspectives.
What I’m looking for in an entry to make it stand out: A crystal clear pitch, that tells me immediately what this book is about, what it’s central dramatic mystery or conflict is, and what about it is brand new. I love a cleverly considered ‘X meets Y’ pitch.
Make sure you open your story with something eye-catching; that draws the reader in but also lets them feel that they are in safe hands, and that showcases your writing and your ability to craft a sentence and pace a narrative.
