Orla’s grandad is a seanchai (shanna-KEE), a traditional Irish storyteller of mythology, folklore, and history. When Grandad becomes sick, Orla must learn the importance of cultural stories and the memories they keep alive.

Page 3
Grandad tells stories of giants. Irish giants on an ancient island with emerald hills. Of hands as big as boulders and tempers like thunder. ‘They drank rivers in one gulp and tossed mountains into the sea. They were fierce, so they were.’
Page 4-5
Grandad sits beneath the hawthorn tree and tells of cliffs where castles crumble and seabirds nest. Of forests and meadows aglow with the fire of fairies. Grandad is a seanchai, a keeper of Irish stories, a home for the history we carry in our bones.
Orla is his granddaughter. She is the brave hero who defeats the giants. [Orla jumps out from behind the tree, dressed as a warrior.]
